two textile artists

Last days for a show at Nääs konsthantverk outside Göteborg. I'm so glad I made the trip!

Alexander Grüner, Norwegian artist, has created a total space filling piece based on a poem by Oscar Wilde (a poem he wrote after being imprisoned for two years, for being homosexual, and isn't it a good coincidence the opening of this exhibition happened at the seam time as Stockholm Pride).

Yet each man kills kills the things he loves. Alexander concentrated on three of the 109 verses and translated the words into Morse code, Yet Each Man Kills The Thing He Loves.

In the project room, newly graduated Kristin Bergman showed a project Klädd i blyerts, pencil drawn dresses and fabrics. So clever.

outdoor craft - upmarket 2013

The annual outdoor craft fair UPMARKET that KHVC organizes is on all weekend in the park Trädgårdsföreningen, Göteborg.

Besides all the fun shopping there are two performances:
Newly graduated ceramic artist Matilda Haggärde is making a clay performance where she totally encloses herself in clay (she will be there Saturday 16 - 18 and Sunday 15 - 17).

Textile art students Hållams Linnea Henriksson and Lina Sofia Lundin, Lproduktion, ask if it's possible to pruduce art and sell by the meter.

textile meeting

This weekend I was a textile hangaround. I stayed with a textile artists' network, NTA - Nordic Textile Art, that had a meeting in Borås.

I wanted to catch up with what is going on in Borås, the place for textile industry in Sweden. Now most of the production moved to low cost countries but there is still a future in textiles here:
Fashion and Textile studies and research at the University, small specialized high tech companies for digital printing and smart textiles development.

Next year the huge new Textile and Fashion Center will open, where the school, the museums and all kinds of textile companies and designers will move. I'm just worried how they will be able to move these fantastic big jaquard looms!

I'm happy I spent time with these friendly textile artists and there was a lot to learn, for a ceramic artist too.

tina l. frausin at the fair

Tina showed pieces of a commission, a mix of hand tufted textile and sand casted illuminated shapes. It's inspired by the coral reefs, and originally created as a commission for a hospital in Uddevalla. More photos from the big colorful piece to be seen at Tina's web page.

Konstepidemin's gallery is at a totally different fair; Supermarket Art Fair, 60 artist run galleries and such at Kulturhuset Stockholm. Seems a lot of fun.

Eva Davidsson at the fair

Next fellow exhibitor at Stockholm Furniture Fair: Eva Davidsson's whimsical, pretty flower lamps are handdyed/pleated in shibori technique. They were shortlisted for a Design of the year award lately. Eva sells her work at Konsthantverkarna in Stockholm, among other places. No web site, yet...

Ulrika Krynitz, Stockholm Furniture Fair

Ulrika Krynitz, Urnatur, showed a carpet designed for golfers at Stockholm Furniture Fair. Very popular with playful people of all ages. Besides creating lovely green design she runs a wood hermitage from April to October, eco lodge for retreats or meetings, one can sleep in treehouses or moss huts. Click around the webpage and enjoy the photos!

winter weave and winter wreath, Tjolöholm

At Tjolöholms castle outside Kungsbacka they prepare for Christmas. Next weekend is their huge traditional Christmas market. Already now my ceramic wreaths and textile artist Kerstin Åsling's weaved pieces hang in the newly restored Storstugan café and restaurant. The scent of gingerbread laid heavy when we arrived to put our work up on Friday!

Tjolöholm is a Tudor Style manor, the dream of a perfect little place in the world built by James Fredrik Dickson. He died of lead poisening when he, after he had cut his finger, put the lead from a champagne bottle around it. His wife Blanche finished the construction of the place in 1904. The interior design is from Liberty in London, still intact and one of the best examples of Art and Craft in Sweden.

Both Kerstin and me are inspired by folk art and our work seem to fit into the countrystyle, national romantic style of Storstugan. It is open every weekend, we show our work until January 31.

up and coming

Hanna Michaelsson, up and coming textile artist, shows her project Hårda maskor at Göteborgs Konstförening, such a nice Sunday afternoon visit. Crocheted owls in bronze and wood, a little forest world in itself. www.hannamichaelsson.se

PS Didn't make it to the New Zeeland jewellery seminar Saturday, to much football team catering and attic space cleaning to be done. But I came in time to the nice party. Paula was there all day, look here...

to all the girls

Nina Zetterquist Noli me tangere/Don't touch me touches everyone. The textile- and sound installation in Pannrummet, Konstepidemin, is all about the frailty and beauty of life of girls and women and how easily it's ruined by violence and humiliation.

More artists engaged for girls in the world:
Maria Ängkvist Klyvare's project China girl, photos here
The exhibition opens today at Nya Stadsgalleriet, Halmstad
Buy the Holly dvd here and support film makers, devoted to stop human trafficking.

I'm off for a sunny walk, hope you have a nice weekend too!

It's been a lot about ceramics lately, but here is finally something else. Elisabet Eriksson is a studio neighbor at Konstepidemin. She has a solo show at the gallery right now.

wreath season

Seems to be two major seasons for wreaths and garlands, midsummer and christmas time. On Saturday November 22 opens a show at Konstepidemin, Blå Huset. Three textile artist: Nina Zetterquist, Kerstin Åsling Sundberg and Amalia Kenamets and ceramic me show very different wreaths and garlands. Based on tradition but not always traditional.

Photos above from textile artist Nina Zetterquist's studio. Open the door and it smells of materials and possibilities.

Links to all from here.

vintage knitting

Birgitta Forslund, knit wear designer and friend, released her book "Stickat och virkat - vintage på svenska" this week. Fabulous photos, funny and smart. And knit descriptions for every piece. The book is a collaboration with photographer Åsa Dahlgren, stylist Gudrun Bonér och makeup artist Lydia Gerlam.

Birgitta has knitted for as long as I've known her, I'm proud she has materialized her dreams. Wish the book will inspire many others (and hope soon available in English too).

fabrics and prints

It never happened before I blogged my shopping, is about time! Couldn't resist buying a few metres of the chair wax print fabric, like a crazy image of a room in some colonial hotel. The tap was also tempting, but I promised myself not to bring more textiles home without knowing what to do with them (though I don't know what I'll do with the chairs yet, just look maybe).

These fabrics where brought to Kalebassi from Nigeria by Aino Ternstedt-Oni-Okpaku (one of the Afro Art founders) along with other art and craft objects.

More Kalebassi news is that taylor Omar Nyang have a workshop there from now on. I got the crash course in African textiles, taste the words: ganjala, baseng, indigo, bogolan, korugo...

double dog at Nääs

Petter Hellsing houses

Margon Lindberg

Delivery to Nääs Konsthantverk shop yesterday, where my work is for sale from now on. Next weekend is the grand opening of their new premises at Nääs slott. They already sneak opened, first the ground floor shop and the gallery upstairs. Next is the cafe and later on, on the top floor, artist in residences and seminars. Lot's of potential!

Here photos from the ongoing exhibition Dubbel hund (Double dog)
Petter Hellsing, embroidery and sculpture
Margon Lindberg, ceramic and photograhy

As always these days I'm behind, show open until Sunday only, well worth a visit. I don't know how much collaboration there is behind their exhibition, but the comments to important global and existential issues seem to stem from interesting discussions. I've admired their individual work before, now even more.

Have a pack of photos from the walk by the lake at Nääs, needs to sort them not to bore you off with all wood anemones.

Off to Majornas konstrunda, wish you an inspiring weekend too!

buttons and shoes

Kerstin Åsling Sundberg's beautiful button weaves hung in the Blue House at Konstepidemin last weeks, but I've been behind and didn't tell you, until now.

Warm days like these, people seem to step out of their shoes and maybe vanish.

Konstrundan, Art Tour, for the tenth year this weekend in Majorna, Göteborg.
28 open studios Saturday, Sunday and Monday night, among them
Anna Eggert, glass artist, studio photo here
Anna Martinsson, jewellery artist
Afsaneh Monemi, ceramic artist
Good luck!
