jewellery jewellery jewellery and Mah Rana
This week is the peak of this year's big jewellery gathering in Göteborg; New Adventures in Jewellery. So many interesting exhibition; international, Nordic and local artists in museums, galleries and shops.
The whole program here.
I will attend the two day New Adventures in Jewellery seminar, and will get to meet Mah Rana again. She will give one of the talks about her work that is as much about the people as about the jewellery piece they wear.
Meanings and attachments, ongoing international archive, many many stories on a new website - submit your own!
Mah Rana - Jewellery is life
Photo from the session at Blå Stället in June, when visitors told the story about what personal relation they have to the jewellery they wear. Some fun, some sad, all touching.

100 rings at hnoss
At Konstepidemin until Oct 9: All previous exhibitors at Hnoss gallery was invited to show one ring, the most important piece of jewellery, in the final show at the gallery. Some sent a piece from their exhibition but many made a new ring for the occasion. It is an amazing show, one must look closely. All the rings will be on tour, after this to Tallinn.
Scroll down and see all 100 rings here...

It's over in Alingsås
The summer exhibition in Alingsås Konsthall is over. The summer itself seems over.
I was the driver also for getting co-exhibitor jewellery artist Paula Lindblom's work to Göteborg, these are her pieces in the show.

to the world from new zeeland

Think I'm slowly catching up, now I'm doing things I thought about doing in May. Still not much studio work in sight, only office things, but it's getting closer.
At galleri Hnoss Warwich Freeman shows jewellery. There will be a seminar on Friday - Reconsidering Identity - with New Zeeland jewellery artists, I want to attend. Warwick's rings are made of minerals from the whole New Zeeland, thus describing the variation and diversity of many things. I want to hear more.

happy midsummer!

This is the heaviest book I've ever held: The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewellers 2008. 13,5 kilo, 2400 pages where 1044 jewellery artists from 54 nations present themselves, nominated by jewellery artists. An amazing idea and I will visit Mona Wallström's studio (she's in it and thus has it) many times too look more. Once is not enough.
Read more at Darling publications
This blog seems to have taken early holidays, let's see for how long.
Happy midsummer to all!

karin seufert

Karin Seufert, show at hnoss gallery. She kidnaps well known brand symbols (see the pumas?) and uses them her own way. Article here (Swedish)
They seem to have a real good time at the workshop Taking parts. 12 jewellery artists in concentrated silence over recycled materials. Will show photos next time.
Don't miss the events this weekend; workshop show tomorrow and seminar Sunday, read prevoius post.

week summary

I don't understand why. First I take a month off from the office job to get more time for studio work. Then I jump on all kinds of other things and don't get much more time for studio work at all. Please explain.
But it's been an interesting and fun week, altogether:
- Discussions on how to develop Konstepidemin and organize the staff for a future with new projects.
- A visit to a school; the atmosphere in the teacher's room still makes me feel insecure like a twelve years old (cup photo from their well organized coffee corner).
- Discussions on how to bring artists into school's work.
- And in between some clay work, too.
I'm slowly updating the Konstepidemin website, one step at the time. The English part still looks horrible but I'm happy to show the Swedish "what's up".
Bumped into Paula at an exhibition opening, she posts: Same same but better at the Röhss museum. Twelve jewelry artists discussing original and copies in an innovative way.
Kajsa Åman is a gem herself and one of the 12. She created a slightly more sophisticated copy of a 20 dollar piece of shopping mall jewellery using only precious gemstones and platinum. She spotlights the fact that a lot of cheap material jewellery consists of unsafe materials like lead (to bring more weight and thus give a feeling of being more valuable). Not good for me and not good for the factory worker.
Today; off to look at Jill Lindströms opening at Galleri PS. From another show here, article (Swedish) here.

juicy jewellery

Those of you nearby, don't miss Charlotte Sinding's jewellery show at Sintra. It's colourful and fun and challenging all at once. The way she sets the space is also strong, more photo's here (click to enlarge).
Big hooray and congratulations to Camilla Engman! She is the artist invited to create the poster for next year's Göteborg Film Festival, and that's really big news over here. Here are all the posters from previous film festivals.
I feel energetic this week, wish you the same!

hnoss heroes

Charlotte Skalegård

Linda Marie Karlsson

Karin Johansson

Mona Wallström
Photos from Hnoss show at Nääs. The nine artists that form the working committee behind gallery Hnoss are themselves jewellery artists. Some newly graduated, some with long experience. There is so much commitment from them and the other artists and jewellery students from HDK, and energy put into the gallery. In return, it seems, they get a lot of energy back, network with other artists and galleries over the world. It's so clever and as a visitor I'm grateful. Here they are, not many of them having websites to see more, sorry:
Charlotte Skalegård, Lena Olson, Carolina Claesson, Karin Andersson, Cecilia Johansson, Mona Wallström, Linda Marie Karlsson, Karin Johansson, Tore Svensson
In the new project room, three graduating students from HDK: Klara Brynge, Karin Andersson
and Serena Holm. Good luck with jewellery life!
No progress with book keeping.
Wish you a lovely, sunny weekend!

wood flowers

Another sunny day, long walk home. Today wood anemones were fully awake.
Paula Lindblom, Göteborg blogger, still shows her work at Kaustik gallery, until the 26th. Jewellery from everyday material, and really nice photos.
At the same street, Eva Dahlin, Konstepidemin artist, opens a show at artist run Galleri 54 tonight. I'm not going to miss it.
Hope I can concentrate better tomorrow, even if it's sunny.

water in desert

Another great jewellery artist at Hnoss, until April 20, Peter Hoogeboom.
It's ceramic! Of course I feel connected, little vessels everywhere. Porcellain and paper clay if I got it right. Amazing work, so fine and delicate, and funny. The camel necklace is made out of water bottles...
Paula Lindblom opens her show "everything is relative" at Galleri Kaustik tomorrow, jewellery with a recycled twist. Paula's blog.
This weekend I will spend hours catching up reading blogs, I'm hopelessly behind. I wish you have fun too!

little gallery tour

I feel a little like being on the run when I go to look at others exhibitions instead of working on my own. I'ts so sunny it's difficult to concentrate.
Dutch jewellery artist and designer Ted Noten, shows his Amsterdam at Galleri Hnoss
More pieces at Klimt02.
Konstepidemin artist Ragnar Schmid, I almost forgot! how could I!? show at Galleri Aveny until March 9. Previous exhibition.
Röhss museum photos tomorrow.

spoons

Only one gallery visited this weekend, Hnoss, on my way to the studio.
I don't usually work weekends but it felt like a good idea to spend a few hours. And it was. Some author told his best trick to not get stuck with his writing:
"Always leave the last sentence unfinished for tomorrow".
It works.
Ulrich Reithofer, Austrian jewellery artist, all pieces in the show include spoons. Here necklaces.
A spoon further contest, Yekaterinburg's Artists' Club 1998. The fish won.
Magie Hollingworth paper spoons and other tools
Let's have a creative week ahead.

shows at konstepidemin right now

Hnoss gallery shows jewellery artist Anna Martinsson. I've always liked her work, inspired by traditional ornaments, like the jewellery in national costumes. It's a lot about love, like wedding rings and crowns. This exhibition "Memento" moves around in the renaissance era.
Anna Martinsson web page here.
Article (Swedish) here.
(the main gallery shows Tore Ahnoff paintings, article here, Swedish, sorry)
Truike Verdegaal has something in common with Anna, also touched by another time, I like the Bird Collection.
Cally's blog is all about white this month. So many surprising and beautiful links to follow! Best thing is there is a lot of January left, more to look forward to.

closed and open doors

I have a thing for doors, as many of us. These doors are not opened much anymore, but tell a story of times in change up north.
No clay today, spent first half thinking I was to attend an Indesign class (which was postponed until Monday but I didn't know) and second half looking for a new used computer, more successfully.
It was a nice day at Bildverkstan, community digital facilities of all kinds for artists. Lots of helloes said. Medieverkstäderna in English and Swedish.

Serena Holm brooch: Sedna 2007. Porcelain doll, silver, plastic, paper, silk, glass, coral, pearl, parts of a clock-work 12 x 12 x 3,5 cm, detail. Photo from Klimt02 webpage
Serena Holm, jewellery artist here in Göteborg, has a very nice statement that goes so well with her pieces. She borrowed it from the theatre director's Christmas speech in the Ingmar Bergman film “Fanny and Alexander”:
“My only talent, if you can talk about talent in my case, is that I love this little world inside the thick walls of this house and I also love the people who work in this little world...
Outside there is the big world, and sometimes the little world manages to reflect the big world so we can understand it somewhat better, or we can give the people, who come here, a possibility to forget, for a short moment the difficult world out there.
Our theatre is a tiny..., a tiny space of order, exactness, carefullness and love.”

recycling in luleå and chandigarh

Luleå has a new Culture Center, so successful it's a problem for the city to handle, isn't that great.
Lucky to be there in time to see the exhibition Guldglasgummioggenbrug by seven Scandinavian jewellery and recycling artists: Bettina Schori, Maria Lewis, Lone Villaume, Dögg Gudmundsdottir, Ellis HInz Berg, Lisbeth Nordskov and Sara Engberg (who runs Mori&Mimosa with fashion designer Christina Wemming) Colour, innovation, fun and beauty.

Top: Lone Villaume, a series of places, cigar boxes, photo, bicycle tube... Middle: Ellis Hinz Berg, "Irma" food store ads paper Bottom: Maria Lewis: "Masskonsumtion" metal caps

Celebrating 30 years as recycling artist hero is Nek Chand, the creator of Rock Garden in Chandigarh, India. haven't been there (yet!), only seen films and photos and have this little book from Haus der Kulturen der Welt for substitute.
The story is that Nek Chand, an Indian road inspector, started to create this marvelous sculpture park 30 years ago, made from waste material and mud. Nek wasn't a rich man but truly devoted, used whatever he could find from stones to glass bangles, and he didn't own the land so he did it in secret. Now he is world famous and there is a whole conference to celebrate his creation. the "Rock Garden Diamond Jubilee Conference and Celebration ". Starts today.
Nek Chand foundation invites volunteers to stay and work in the Rock Garden.
Nek Chand article in Raw Vision magazine, tells the whole story.
My exhibition in Örebro here.
